To the Harbor Master,
Sir,
Your's of yesterdays date duly to hand and its contents carefully noted, I will for as far as possible endeavour to meet your requests on the different heads.
The ship 'Portland' was lately Chartered to convey Coolies hence to Surinam (Dutch Guyana), and it was usual to fit the ship with all the appliances necessary for an Emigrant ship from this port. The ship was placed at the disposal of the Agents for Emigration as such.
The first embarkation took place on Wednesday the 24th October, when 36 females joined; on Thursday the 25th 18 females & 80 males joined = on Friday the 26th about 36 males joined, making a total of 170 or thereabouts. Nothing further...
